Maunakea is a celebrated and storied place in the cultural traditions of Hawai'i.

While it is the dwelling place of the goddess Poli'ahu it is also associated with the Hawaiian deities Lilinoe and Waiau. The summit was considered the realm of the gods and in ancient times was kapu (forbidden) to all but the highest chiefs and priests. Occasionally Hawaiian ali'i (royalty) would make the long trek to the top, the last royal visitor being Queen Emma in 1881 who led her companions on the arduous 6 hour journey to the top to see the summit and rejuvenate herself in sacred Lake Waiau.

The White Mountain
Legends of the Mountain - Poli´ahu

While today Maunakea is home to 13 international observatories and recieves thousands of visitors every year it remains a sacred place for the people of Hawai'i. On the the fourth Saturday of every month MKVIS hosts community speakers who speak about Mauna O Wakea from a cultural perspective.

Awesome trip! Our tour guide Hunter is so knowledgeable about everything of the trip. There’s quite a bit of driving going up to the mountain, and both Hunter and Robin, our first leg driver, kept us entertained along the way. Highly recommend this tour to anyone who are interested in seeing the sunset and stars.

We took their Mercedes-Benz that day and it was very clean and comfortable. Snacks were delicious (and they had a lot of Chinese snacks which we loved very much). The star-gazing was awesome. The guide is knowledgeable and everyone had a chance to use the telescope. If you do not have an astronomy background, I highly recommend booking this tour instead of driving yourself.

The van broke down 1/4 mile from the visitor center. We had to wait for another van to get us to the visitor center. Once there, that second van left us there for nearly an hour. We had to wait for yet third van to be dispatched from Hilo. Needless to say, we missed the sunset which is why we booked this tour. I have to say, Nate & Donna did a great job of trying to take the sting out of the episode. Unfortunately, this was our last opportunity to go up, so, pretty disappointing!!!

Excellent service and safety ensurance. They did the temp screening before on bus. Prepare good snacks while everyone is waiting and hungry! My driver is local from Hawaii, very friendly and take care! Wonderful trip!

My wife and I can’t speak highly enough of the Summit and Stars tour of Mauna Kea. The experience of watching the sunset over a sea of clouds and mountains at nearly 14,000 feet was unmatched. But the real highlight for us was the hour-plus long stargazing experience. Our guide Nate was tremendous in giving us a crash course on stars, galaxies, nebulas, and why the night sky looks the way it does. Seeing planets and stars through the telescope was incredible as was the sheer volume of stars visible at 9,000 feet on the slopes of Mauna Kea. A nice spread of hot chocolate and light snacks were provided (cup o noodles, Milano cookies, nutter butter, biscotti, etc…).

Highly recommend! Sure, people go without a tour, but many did not seem to know how to drive the grades and they didn't have Nate! Nate made the trip for us. Very informative throughout the evening. The star viewing and his knowledge was amazing! Thank you for a great evening!

Our tour guide was Hunter. He was awesome with detailed knowledge of Hawaii facts and astronomy. We were picked up from Hilo right on time and were early at every scheduled stops at the Visitor Information center and the summit. We loved our time at the summit where witnessed a wonderful sunset with cloud layer below us and a Mona loa peak visible distantly. 15-20 minutes after the sunset, we gathered a nearby place for stargazing which was amazing experience. The night sky was filled with stars and milky way was visible as well. Hunter gave us an amazing narrated tour of the night sky. We were provided with hot chocolate and some snacks. Through a professional telescope, we got to see different planets like Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. Towards the end, we had our pictures taken with their DSLR in front of the milky way. The trip is a complete value for money and we highly recommend it for anyone visiting Big Island.
