I came to Icy Strait Point, excited for some whale watching. We saw a humpback whale soon after leaving. A little later, we came across many whales later on that breached all the way up. There was one whale that went directly under the boat. We also saw a pod of orcas on the way back along with a sea otter. Overall, while I wish that the boat ride could have gone to Glacier Bay, it was a highlight of Alaska.
In the midst of almost every business facing uncertainty my call to HTA could not have been more pleasant. The refund came within a couple days through my CC and I mentioned to the lady taking my call I wish them the best and hope to book again in the future. I wouldn't hesitate in an instant to re-book with HTA. I want all companies to make it through this COVID19 issue, but especially ones like HTA. Wishing you the best and hope to see you soon. PS, Our trip was set for May 2020
We did a whale watching tour with Hoonah Travel Adventures while cruising through Alaska. Everything from booking through to the excursion exceeded my expectations. I had emailed the office to ask about the rate for a group of 8 and no sooner had I sent an email advising we would book I received a phone call from the team (even though I am in Australia) to complete the process. So easy! The bus to the boat was a short walk from the cruise ship terminal. We then boarded our boat - it seated about 20 people. The crew were amazing sharing stories about life in Hoonah and, of course, whales. We saw so many whales. It was peaceful on the water and you could hear the sounds of whales from every direction. Two whales even swam right under our boat. I was too busy admiring them to video it but the crew shared their video with us so we could show friends at home our amazing experience. We spent six weeks on holiday in the USA and Canada and all of my family, including the kids say this excursion was the highlight of our trip. Highly recommended!
They say life is defined by the moments that take your breath away, and if thats the case, our afternoon spent on this whale watching adventure was a very defining moment. Absolutely amazing!! Our guides told us from the get go that we would be headed to a spot about 30-40 minutes away, and would possibly be passing up some whales in the process, but the trip would be worth it. Boy was it. They took us to a spot where a group of humpbacks were 'cooperatively feeding'. Y'all....thats is bubble netting!! We spent almost an hour with the group as they moved along the shoreline. Giving us beautiful visuals as they flipped their flukes to dive, then we waited...enjoying the quiet. Then the sea birds would squack and head to the next spot, alerting us to the surfacing of the whales. It was simply magical. The guides were friendly and outgoing, sharing their wealth of knowledge about their island home, and the animals that share their space. We saw the whales, otters, and birds. It was a perfect way to spend my birthday afternoon, and one I'll never forget. If you are thinking about doing this 'tour'.....DO IT! Do it multiple times if you get the opportunity. I don't regret a minute of it or the $$$ we spent.
I can't say enough good things about this experience! Captain Paul and his daughter Gabby were so knowledgeable and entertaining. I loved every minute, and seeing all the whales was something I'll never forget. Make sure you put this at the top of your list of what to do in Alaska.
We booked this excursion online and couldn't have been happier with the whole experience. The online booking process was so easy, the team that met us at the cruise ship and dock were fun and informative, and Captain Paul was wonderful! He's extremely knowledgeable about the area and whales, was able to find 20+ during our three hour tour including humpbacks and orcas. Highly recommended!
We picked this excursion based on previous reviews and it did not disappoint. This whale watching excursion seemed much more personal as its a smaller group compared to the ship excursions. Captain Paul Comolli (along with his assistant Gaby) is a great story teller, not only about whales, but about life in general in Alaska.Paul quickly found an area with abundant humpback whales, probably 5-6.And they stayed in one spot for the 2 or so hours that we were there. We did not have to chase them, they came to us. Several got to within one or two meters of the boat and provided fantastic photo opportunities doing terminal dives. Highly recommend this excursion..
